LASIK solved this problem. Using a delicate cutting instrument called a microkeratome, surgeons made a sideways slice through the cornea's outermost layers, leaving one side attached, and carefully lifted the flap of tissue out of the way. In nearsighted patients, an invisible beam of laser light then trimmed away layers of tissue from the center of the cornea, producing a flatter curve. In farsighted patients, the beam scooped out a doughnut-shaped ring that resulted in a steeper curve. Then the doctors lifted the flap back into place. After a few minutes of drying, it rebonded with the rest...
...Bank of New York senior VP Natasha Gurfinkel Kagalovsky, who spearheaded the bank?s expansion effort into Russia, is one of the executives suspended in the money-laundering flap. Her husband? Konstantin Kagalovsky, who in the early '90s was Russia?s representative to ?- guess what? - the IMF. It gets better. The other suspended executive, Lucy Edwards, is married to a shady businessman named Peter Berlin, who authorities have linked, through his company Benex Worldwide, to reputed Russian mobster/arms dealer Semion Mogilevitch. ...that the worst of the national security flap over China appears to be over, the White House has decided to do what the computer industry has long wanted: ease export restriction on high-performance computers to foreign countries. On Thursday the President decided to raise the limits on the power of computers that can be sold to more than 100 countries in Central Europe, Latin America and Asia without going through laborious licensing procedures. Good business, or rather the loss of good business, was the basic rationale. "Computers that are widely used by businesses and can be manufactured by European...
...courageous fellows doing what they liked doing, and did, best, and they made an oddly assorted pair. Hillary was tall, lanky, big-boned and long-faced, and he moved with an incongruous grace, rather like a giraffe. He habitually wore on his head a homemade cap with a cotton flap behind, as seen in old movies of the French Foreign Legion. Tenzing was by comparison a Himalayan fashion model: small, neat, rather delicate, brown as a berry, with the confident movements of a cat. Hillary grinned; Tenzing smiled. Hillary guffawed; Tenzing chuckled. Neither of them seemed particularly perturbed by anything...
That episode, like the flap over Jefferson and Hemings, is a reminder that in a country with so many mixed-up genes, telling who's "black" and who's "white" isn't always easy. Black folks play a game called Name That Negro, in which we try to guess which well-known folks passing as Caucasians are really light-skinned blacks. During the impeachment trial of President Clinton, for example, a lot of us joked that one of the Republican House managers fit the profile so well, he should avoid driving through New Jersey...
