...struggle with Ron Goldman, who gouged Simpson with his fingernails, riveted jurors. (Spitz even offered to rake his nails across defense lawyer Robert Baker's skin to demonstrate. "We're not going to have any gouging of flesh out in my courtroom," Judge Fujisaki said.) Even without that dramatic flare-up, the cuts--or rather the assorted stories he has told about them--may prove problematic for the defense. Simpson testified at his January deposition that he cut his left pinkie as he rushed around getting ready to leave for Chicago the night of the murders. "I bleed...
...would-be contenders deny indignantly any thought of succeeding Yeltsin. But the operation is looming--his doctors are expected to name a date on Sept. 25 and are warning that the President is facing a "big and serious" operation. ...mosquito hour, when the grills are cooling and the kids seem to shout louder than ever as they cling to the last light of the day, the people of East Moriches, New York, look up from the decks of their boats and houses and see a 747 flare, break apart and go down in the sea. It is a possibility that Benny Begin, Menachem's son and another hardheaded prospect for the Likud government, concedes is real...
MOSCOW: Ultranationalist Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky predicted civil war if President Boris Yeltsin does not form an election coalition to keep Communist boss Gennady Zyuganov out of the Kremlin. Civil war would flare as early as the fall, Zhirinovsky said, if Zyuganov wins the presidency at the June 16 elections. Zhirinovksy added Yeltsin should offer posts to non-communist candidates in exchange for their support. The coalition Zhirinovsky proposes is a serious issue for Russian presidential candidates as the election draws near. Yeltsin and Zyuganov are neck and neck in the polls, and an endorsement from one of the other...
