...Scores of people were injured and two were killed in two separate incidents on Monday. During the first pre-dawn flare-up, the government said the antigovernment crowds - known as the Red Shirts for their crimson-colored clothing - had provoked the conflict by lobbing Molotov cocktails at troops. The government claimed that 23 soldiers were wounded by the protesters; for their part, the antigovernment forces countered that the soldiers had fired at them and that six of their own had been killed by army bullets - a charge the military denies. When the good news broke, Richard Phillips' ship, the Maersk Alabama, blew its horn three times in celebration from where it was docked in the Kenyan port of Mombasa. The crew also set off a red flare and unfurled a huge American flag at the top of the boat. Phillips, the Alabama's captain, had been rescued after nearly five days of captivity in a rescue operation in which three of the four Somali pirates holding him on a lifeboat were killed. Carlos Javier Trejo, a bullfighting critic based in Seville, agrees. "I think José Tomás had a little flare-up of vanity, like a Hollywood actor who returns an Oscar because he doesn't like the person who wins it the year after him. But it's very unfortunate, because it hurts bullfighting as a whole," Trejo says...

...least a dozen of the valley's once bustling resorts have been forced to close, including Malam Jabba, which militants torched last year. "I have many nice memories there, so I am very sad about it," says Nisar, a photographer from Lahore. Even as cross-border tensions flare between India and Pakistan over the recent Mumbai attacks, many, like Nadeem Sheikh, a businessman in Lahore, feel the crisis in Swat is a much more significant symbol of the country's problems. "This is not the Pakistan I know," says Sheikh, who lives not far from the militarized border with India...
