...NATO peacekeepers remain on the ground in Kosovo to prevent open conflict. But in one scenario, ethnic Serb police stationed in northern Kosovo and supervised by the U.N. would change sides after a declaration of independence, thus compelling the U.N. to impose martial law. Violence could also flare if ethnic Albanians attempt to march on Mitrovice to prevent it from seceding. Any such conflict could easily spill across borders. Meanwhile, Serbs in neighboring Bosnia, where they have their own statelet, Republika Srpska, have threatened to break away if Kosovo secedes...
...statement added that, from what it had gathered, Unity's security team had been approached "at speed by a vehicle that failed to stop despite an escalation of warnings which included hand signals and a signal flare. Finally, shots were fired at the vehicle and it stopped." Unity said, "We deeply regret this incident." Said Cooper: "The State Department extends its sympathy to families of the victims. We are in contact with the Iraqi authorities concerning this incident." For its part, RTI reiterated that none of its own staff were "involved or present when the incident occured," having already been...
...encountered very different realities in the Arctic--and different reactions from locals. In Hammerfest, where reindeer graze in the glow of a gas flare, Purvis found Norwegians delighted by the rewards from a natural-gas extraction plant. In Resolute, the native Inuit are not so sanguine about the benefits of balmy weather. One man invited Graff to watch a videotape of his 16-year-old daughter killing her first polar bear, a rite of passage that is under threat as the melting ice reduces the bear population. For the Inuit, says Graff, "the idea that a warmer Arctic would...
...Sometimes it takes a real asshole to rouse people from apathy or self-doubt. And if discussion is really that poor, people should by all means act like assholes, even if that is not their natural calling. That said, a section overflowing with assholes carries its own liabilities. Arguments flare, egos collide, and substance is forgotten. Such sections ideally need the direction of an assertive TF, but when none is forthcoming, the collective geniality and good humor of everyone else can help to ease tensions. People should step up more often. Much more common than rancorous, intra-section feuds, however...
...twilight over the Barents Sea, bathing the low clouds over the Norwegian port of Hammerfest in a spectral orange glow. With a tremendous roar, the flame bloomed over the windswept ocean and craggy gray rocks, competing for an instant with the Arctic summer's never-setting sun. The first flare-off of natural gas from the Snohvit (Snow White in Norwegian) gas field, some 90 miles (145 km) offshore, was a beacon of promise: After 25 years of false starts, planning and construction, the first Arctic industrial oil-and-gas operation outside of Alaska was up and running. Norway...
