Sometimes the thieves will even approach a farmer and offer to cut his deadwood. Then, says Craig Beek, head of Iowa's Bureau of Criminal Investigation, "Zippo, like a flash, they'll take your walnut trees too." Another ploy is to approach the landowner and ask to buy the trees, promising payment when they are sold to mills. The cutters then disappear with the logs, and the farmer never sees them again...

...other hand, 1969-1973 was also a period packed with dishonesty movies, and the dishonesty was heaviest in those geared to youth: Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider, Getting Straight, or Strawberry Statement, all exploitation "message" movies cashing in on a youth movie fad. They indulge in gratuitous technique, fancy pans, flash forwards and fast cutting; they splurge on a nouveau artistry that distorts our perspectives by filching half the evidence...

Over this almost wistful tale of bittersweet love is superimposed the geometric grid lines of New York, the monolithic city, the steel-and-glass giant. Film projections flash on high-rise panel backdrops and form skyscraper spectaculars. At their shadowy base laps the treacherous asphalt tide of the urban jungle. This translates into dance numbers with the slashing tempi of switchblades, though none are shown or used. Hookers, casual muggings and cops as cynical as the wink of an eye breeze across the stage, less in menace than in roguish mockery. Never mind if any of this is strictly true...
