...hand it to Steve Jobs. Age has not withered the Apple CEO's famous flash and showmanship. P.T. Barnum himself could not have done a better job at the Macworld convention in San Francisco last week. Barnum, of course, could only offer dancing elephants; Jobs has some of the most sublimely sexy high-tech products of our age. And he was able to pull these latest tricks out of his hat at a time when Apple's profits are turning to deficits and Macs are selling at fire-sale prices. Whatever his flaws, the man knows a thing...
Last week I got a reminder from my doctor that it was time for my annual physical. It will probably be the routine drill. He will listen to my lungs, flash his light in my eyes and ask me to cough a couple of times as he examines for a possible hernia. He might run an EKG to test my heart or order an MRI if he sees something suspicious. But that's it. And that's sufficient as far as I'm concerned. Although the name of this CD makes it a front runner for the First Annual Britney Spears Oops!...I Did It Again Goofiest Album Title Award, pretty much everything else about this release...
Popcap is a three-man company run out of an apartment in Seattle. John Vechey, 22, its business manager, says the company is already profitable, making money two ways in the face of the dotcom downturn: from advertisements that flash on your screen while you play, and through licensing fees that other companies pay Popcap to use its games on their sites. Popcap's Tetris-like Diamondmine is the No. 1 game at MSN's GameZone (where it's called Bejeweled). When I visited there last Friday morning, 9,032 people were playing it. Bejeweled was too soft...
