...process, Writer-Director Bergman displays a wide range of comedic accomplishments. He is a master of bedroom farce-not to mention bathroom humor, most of which is not translated in the subtitles. In a flashback to the couple's courtship, he pulls a hilariously rowdy switch on the old Tristan-Isolde routine, and follows it with an uproarious crescendo of crockery-busting buffoonery. Moreover, Bergman flashes a redoubtable power of cynical epigram ("Only impotent men are faithful, and they have unfaithful wives"). And almost every character and scene is shaped by the cutting edge of his irony...
...Furthermore, Actor Shimura, though at moments transcendently right and revealing, rather too continuously resembles a Japanese Jiggs who has just been beaned by the eternal rolling pin and is about to say tweet-tweet. But the minor actors are often superb. The camera work, the cutting, the use of flashback and sound track are spectacularly apt and original. Setting up his easel on Rome's Spanish Steps, he sketches the pigeons until the inevitable tourist sucker expresses interest. Eventually, the painter cadges a meal at the Caffe Greco, or his rent money, or a small "loan" to tide him over till the next patron of the arts appears...
