The first episode continues this artificiality by omitting foreground objects and shoving the characters up against backdrops, divorcing their plain flat facial lighting from the elaborate play of shadows on the flat sets. When the characters decide to join this trivial game of love, the bright spots of light dancing on the walls behind them begin to hit their faces, and the circle of love-affairs begins...
Saroyan's characters are more than slightly alienated from each other, unmotivated in conventional terms, and obsessively concerned with self-expression. One boy insists that he wants to be a hoofer and comedian, though he is a pathetically inept dancer and his jokes fall flat. At one point, Joe (James Broderick) the café philosopher who dominates the stage, puts 27 sticks of gum in his mouth because he has always wanted to do it. When Saroyan says, "In the time of your life, live," one realizes almost eerily that there, 30 years ago, the cry was first raised...

A girl was slapped on the side of the head with a rifle and all of a sudden coke bottles, beer cans, pieces of wood, and stones flew into the phalanx of soldiers. One trooper crumpled when he caught a beer can flat in the face. The people in front started begging with those behind not to throw anything because they were the ones who took the punishment, but it happened again and again. "If one more person throws something. I'm going to get up and leave," a girl whimpered. Another boy, right...
