...Kuroki, who barely gets the chance to breathe for the entire movie, turns in a heart-wrenching portrayal of maternal sacrifice. Water?in the bathtub, in a sullen black canal that oozes past the apartment building, in the rain that falls constantly throughout the film?is omnipresent. The flat itself seems to cry. Scott Cohen (Gilmore Girls' cuddly Mr. Medina) shows some edge as a controlling parole officer, and guest star Red Buttons shines as a mobster in a who's-controlling-whom relationship with Cohen. Lennox Lewis, the bigger man, almost seemed an oversized bully. But, perversely enough, he started getting the crowd on his side...
...rifles and sawed-off shotguns casually slung across the backs of their chairs. I thought it best not to ask why. None of the other diners, well ensconced in their peeling vinyl booths, appeared perturbed. Nor was I, once my thali, or set meal, arrived. Usually served on a flat metal plate divided into sections, thalis are a traditional Indian meal comprised of vegetable curries, a lentil soup, Indian pickles, flat bread, a dessert and a crispy popadam. My Sindhi special featured a delicate green curry of walnut-sized eggplants flavored with cardamom, a spicy red concoction of chili...
