WHAT WITH STEVE FORBES AND ROSS Perot, a lot has been said lately about rich men crowding into presidential politics. But that misses half the story. An unsuccessful run for the White House is a matchless opportunity to acquire wealth, not just flaunt it. In war it may still be the victors who get the spoils. In presidential politics, losing pays better. Whoever wins in November can look forward to a $200,000 annual salary, a White House ringed with tank barriers and a Camp David getaway that's been described as "a medium-quality boys' camp without the horses...

Bill seemed to flaunt his interest in certain women. One summer he liked to run with Pat Wyatt, who was locally renowned as a founder of the Marquis de Sade running club. When he'd return from their runs, he couldn't stop extolling her virtues to his wife. (Wyatt denies any romantic involvement with Clinton.) Hillary would typically say nothing then. His specialty is the slinky, tricky, bias-cut dress (cut across the grain of the fabric), which is the design of choice for movie stars--or anyone who wants to flaunt a shapely figure. Galliano was chosen to revitalize Givenchy by Bernard Arnault, president of LVMH, which owns not only that house but also Lacroix and Dior. It was time, Arnault had decided, to put Hubert de Givenchy out to pasture. The aristocratic designer ran an admirable house for 43 years...

...have friends and roommates who are shamelessly out of touch with what is going on in the real world. Some other students I know even flaunt their ignorance, as if their selfish insularity were a personal point of pride. I do not understand how people can play hours of video games without knowing who is running for president of the United States or the shocking significance of the federal debt in their lives...
