Carousel (20th Century-Fox). In the years between the wars, European audiences licked their lips over Liliom, the play by Ferenc Molnar. What they liked about its flavor was the salt. U.S. theater goers did the same over Carousel, the musical that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein made from the play in 1945, but what they liked about its flavor was the sugar-the pretty pink icing of the plot, and most of all the sunny flowing honey of the lovely Rodgers tunes. The melodies have all their clovered freshness still, but if film fans lick their lips over anything...
...late. As the Calaf, Mario del Monaco is properly stentorian; recent years' wear in his voice is apparent only in the lyric aria "Nessun dorma." Although performance for performance the new set is balanced by the old Cetra album, improved recording gives the London set more of the flavor of Puccini's colorful score...
...director's taste. The demons, Simon Darkway and Dirk Sneath, are slimy and deplorable in a hissable maner. As played by Paul Haskell and Jonathan Keyes, they are very successful in linking the whole show together. ...first hearing, the Seventh is not a work to seize its listeners by the ears or by viscera either. Instead, it sounds neat, trim and attractive, with an overall flavor bland enough to permit the savoring of delicate, sonic side dishes. The first movement is sunny and almost muscular, the slow movement an exurbanite pastoral, whose plaintive tune (in solo strings and winds) is accompanied by brassy grunts and then by vague and charming counter-tunes. This movement also contains an enigmatic episode: a sudden passage of smashing violence, gone as suddenly as it came. The finale is in jocose...
