...character types (Griffith, Hayden, Graham Crowden, Patrick Magee, George Coulouris), and Miss Runacre, a skillful actress, who looks smashing into the bargain. The Last Days of Man on Earth, fractured and funny, is an authentic curiosity. Pace Woody Allen, it is a true sleeper, a movie both of substantial flaw and surprise. When one of the scientists announces with pride that the group has "the best brains in Eu rope working for us," and when it is shown just what he means, Allen would recognize a kindred anarchic spirit...
Paradise Lost's second major flaw is Rothschild's writing style. While the book is often intelligible, barrages of jumbled sentences and creative grammar make the reader question her very analytical ability. ("From the mid 1910s, sustained by national machine fever, the auto investment boom swerved higher and higher.") Unfortunately, she is not alone in this regard. The characters announce their problems rather than portray them, and then move to renounce them, rather than resolve them. When Toni's friend Nina announces "I have confidence, I'm wild, I'm radiant, I'm magnificent" one wants to grab her and shake her, shouting...
Kissinger must have been too preoccupied and slightly fuddled with the increasingly apparent downslide of his mentor to be able to look seriously at Cyprus from the outset, many analysts are now saying. But if that is so, it represents a fundamental flaw that has now been exposed to the world...
