...second flaw in the euphoric confidence of today's art traders is a matter of historical myopia. How wonderful, we are told, that all things rise in price, as though in some universal resurrection and canonization of the dead. Twenty years ago, you might not have got $1,000 for the Pre-Raphaelite painting that now fetches $100,000. The $30,000 Tiffany lamp was not worth $3,000, and so on. One is left with the impression-indeed it is cultivated assiduously by the largest gaggle of public relations people ever to batten on the flank of culture...

...Superman. Benton's crisp pictorial style, which has become more pronounced with each film, can be traced to his years as art director for the graphically innovative Esquire magazine of the early '60s. His preference for characters over plot-something of a flaw in The Late Show-comes from Truffaut, a friend and mentor since Bonnie and Clyde. In Kramer, Benton pays tribute to the French director by using snatches of the Vivaldi mandolin concerto; the same music turned up in The Wild Child, Truffaut's masterpiece about another relationship between a man and a young...

This task is not the same as making Barry Commoner president. Some representatives of grassroots groups opposed plans to nominate Commoner. For them, the flaw in the anointment is the lack of time for organizing across the country. Others complain the party was unilaterally set up by a few wealthy liberals who are taking a "top-down" approach in general. But co-chair Harriet Barlow says the "organizing of the party is entirely open." The party will nominate the presidential candidate at a convention next March. The strategy now is to make a splash in the press with the presidential...

...provisional government in Cambodia that would exclude backers of both the Peking-supported Khmer Rouge and Hanoi-sponsored Heng Samrin. Sihanouk declared that his organization was supported by 100,000 exiled Cambodians around the world. But, as one U.S. State Department official put it last week, "Sihanouk's fatal flaw is that his so-called troops are actually scattered around the coffee houses of the U.S., Australia and Western Europe...

...vehicle one would expect for Midler's screen debut: it aspires to the tradition of Funny Girl and Lady Sings the Blues, musicals that boosted Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross to fast movie stardom by casting them as legendary singers of the past. Still, there is a basic flaw in The Rose's design that makes the film hard to take seriously. While Streisand and Ross were reasonably plausible stand-ins for Fanny Brice and Billie Holiday, Midler is not credible as a bluesy rock belter. Her strident Broadway voice and campy mannerisms have more in common with...
