Calling Jane's Addiction a bastion of integrity makes them sound like an American motor vehicle company, but the sentiment rings true, from the smallest details to the big shebang. Part of a tour scrupulously dubbed a "relapse" and not a reunion proper--Red Hot Chili Pepper Flea fills in ably for original guitarist Eric Avery--the band overcame the dead-end venue of the Gosman Center at Brandeis to produce frankly beautiful wide-open soundscapes charged through with Perry's idiosyncratic timbres...
Together with the expert riffs of Dave Navarro and, here, the now seductive, now speedy bass plucking of Flea, the meaning of "soundscape" and "integrity"--in the literal sense of fullness--becomes clear. With the exception of something like "Been Caught Stealing," with its eminently marketable dog barks and MTV mock-shock video, Jane's Addiction has always had the ability to make one forget about the asphyxiating, essentially D.O.A. verse-refrain structure of the rock song. The proof is in the aural pudding--smooth, textured, not strung together...
...guitarist, Dave Navarro, put out a little-remembered CD called Deconstruction which died without a whimper. Drummer Stephen Perkins and singer Perry Farrell formed the nucleus of Porno for Pyros and released two largely point-less CD's. But rejoice, Jane's Addiction is back! With the affable Flea replacing Eric Avery on bass, the group finally has a new album...
...Vermont, the guy who services our office computer network drives a minivan; so does the gentleman who maintains the brochure racks in my office, and my caterer and contract furniture supplier. Not a housewife among them. Minivans are practical vehicles that can haul other things besides runny-nosed kids, flea-bitten dogs and henpecked husbands. Sport-utes can't match them for practicality and cargo or passenger space, the price is right and, frankly, a minivan will never be mistaken for the extension of macho man that a Hummer or Range Rover surely is. PAULA WESSON Stowe...
...Crash of 1929, which bankrupted a number of the theater owners, turning legitimate stages into burlesque houses and movie theaters. Even in Giuliani's youth questionable entertainments were a staple (the future mayor could have paid to see a man eat live mice at Hubert's Museum and Flea Circus). The postwar exodus of the city's middle class continued the block's slow skid into porndom...
