This past week, musicians and volunteers from all over New England have been hard at work on the N.E.S.T. festival (the North East Sticks Together). With over 35 events at venues all over Boston, including tomorrow’s Punk Rock Flea Market at Mass Art, a scene favorite since 2002 which features “some of the best DIY crafts, used records, vegan snacks, and random junk in Boston.” For more information, see www.nest2006.com...
Brief synopsis: singer Cee-lo Green—who along with producer Danger Mouse composes Gnarls Barkley—is the leader of an animated band of fleas. He’s fallen for a tall, blonde (human) bombshell in bobby socks and a yellow housedress. Having taken up residency on her retriever, the flea colony is forced to endure several trials for the sake of the head flea’s love. Yes, but it's these little things that make life bearable in Maizan...

The first disc, subtitled Jupiter, is wall-to-wall melodies that bob and weave on Flea's bass playing and Anthony Kiedis' vocal cords. (Lyrically he's still concerned with the abstract fantasia that is his California life, but no matter.) The second disc, Mars, is more experimental but still catchy enough to play straight through. Welcome back, fellas...
...when they made the “Give it Away” video—unfortunately, this song is a sleeping pill by comparison. Some of the video’s clips are throwaways, but there are more than a few highlights. Like when we find bassist Flea looking completely out of his element in a ’50s dark suit, playing an enormous double bass. The look on his face suggests that the two-piece is a bit more confining than his more typical strategically-placed tube sock, but the master of the funky electric bass looks like...
