Scottie begins to understand that by never committing himself to anyone he has hurt those to whom he should be closest. As father and son grow more acquainted, they recognize themselves in each other; Jud's sobriety is a reaction to Scottie's geniality, and each is locked into an extremely isolating mode of behavior...
...land is much as it must have been in colonial times, when the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy held most of northeastern New York and portions of Vermont, Ontario and Quebec. The trees still whisper in the chill wind, and the delicate tracks of deer fleck the snow. ...keep it that way, the authors rigorously suppress untidy complexity. Mrs. Uhnak's novel ends in a hasty melodramatic knitting of loose strands. Maas' reportage resolutely refuses to go beyond Serpico's own viewpoint. Whittemore is worst of all, portraying his heroes without a fleck of imperfection. They burst into pushers' apartments but somehow never violate any constitutional rights. They slay two big-time drug suppliers, but the regrettable bloodletting really happens because other cops fail to back them up properly. They manage to get convictions on more than 90% of the 600 suspects they arrest...
