...China's government is backing the industry's push toward electric cars. Large fleet owners - in China, that's mainly regional governments and taxi companies - now get subsidies worth up to $8,800 per vehicle if they buy electric. Beijing has also announced that it will spend $1.5 billion in grants to help its auto industry innovate. Because most Chinese car owners don't travel long distances, but rather commute in smoggy, traffic-clogged cities, a switch to plug-in electric vehicles is more plausible in China than in other countries...

...just off the coast of the historic port city of Qingdao, an armada of Chinese naval vessels, accompanied by 21 visiting ships from 14 different foreign Navies - the United States very much included. On April 19, the U.S.S. Fitzgerald, a 6,800 ton missile destroyer with the storied 7th Fleet, cruised into Qingdao harbor, a welcoming phalanx of Chinese sailors standing at attention dockside...

And putting the minimum standard for new cars at 27 m.p.g. means that more than half the cars already in the U.S. fleet would qualify, since the existing federal fuel-efficiency standard is 27.5 m.p.g. for cars. Given that it takes a lot of energy to make a car, junking an old one in favor of a brand-new vehicle that is only marginally more efficient would barely produce any overall oil savings...
