What books are you reading at the moment? -Lynn K. Gardaz in MacauI love historical accounts and I'm reading about the Battle of Jutland in 1916 between the German High Seas Fleet and the British Frand Fleet. It's the last of the great Armadas facing each other, and it never happened again. I love history. I'm fascinated by World War I, by how the whole map of Europe changed so radically between 1914 and 1918. It's never been the same since, and we're still struggling with those changes...
...evacuate hotels and holiday resorts, fleeing Greece as local governors declared states of emergency in a raft of districts and islands. Bewildered by the crisis, Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis purportedly scrapped plans for an early election, turning instead to Russian President Vladimir Putin for urgent firefighting assistance (a fleet of water-bombers, helicopters and amphibious planes). But Herodotus does more than report - he also imparts a lesson that modern-day rulers should heed. "Whoever first starts a war," warns Kapuscinski, "in Herodotus' opinion commits a crime [and] will be revenged upon and punished...
...mileage requirements for sport-utility vehicles and minivans. "I've been looking after American manufacturing and American industry for years--it isn't just autos," Dingell acknowledged proudly. Besides, he added, neither he nor Detroit is to blame for the fact that overall mileage of the U.S. auto fleet hasn't improved. Americans simply prefer high-performance, four-wheel-drive towing machines, even for the preschool car pool. And in this free country, "if the people want something," he said, "they...
