Glossy views of Chinese patients stretched out on operating tables, their bodies bristling, porcupine-like, with needles, used to be the fare of National Geographic or colorful travel brochures. Acupuncture--the Oriental practice of piercing the flesh with steel needles to relieve illness--was long as exotic to Westerners as snake soup or the I ching. The mere mention of it to a Western physician would invite a stern, finger-wagging lecture on the perils of quackery...

...message he conveyed was that poor people are batterers. A social worker in the room rebuked him. As Dole was struggling to extricate himself, his aides hustled him away. But aware of how it would look if he ended this rare ghetto visit without pressing the flesh, Dole hopped out of the car and strode across the street into a local rib joint. The customers, most of them unemployed black men, answered his congenial banter with hard-eyed stares. Not five minutes later, his face fixed in a pained smile, Dole retreated to his motorcade. As he crossed what must...

...Myers-Briggs personality-type assessment system used by management consultants, Gore tests out as a mild introvert, which his flesh-pressing boss could never be. Gore loves preparing for meetings with foreign leaders, attending Clinton's national-security briefings, or patiently explaining chaos theory and fractals to staff members as they work all night at his house on an M.I.T. graduation speech, surrounded by note cards and bits of paper stuck on easels. "For him it's like golf. He loves it!" concludes an aide. But beneath this wonkish exterior, the President has found a smart politico. After...

This exotic moral stink had drifted halfway around the world, after all, from Vietnam...

Perot '96 will be pretty much the same model as Perot '92, with roughly the same sticker price. You won't see much flesh pressing; Perot doesn't care for it. His strategy will be to focus on television set-pieces--infomercials long on info, short on entertainment. The star, as before, will be the plainspeaking, chart-wielding, sound-bite-spouting candidate himself telling America what's what. Also, don't expect many press conferences. Perot regards the press as his true rival. When he has something to say and wants to do it for free, he will saddle...
