Make Them Die Slowly proudly proclaims 24 SCENES OF BARBARIC TORTURE, including a scene in which a man slices a woman in half. Flesh Feast reveals "body maggots" that consume live human beings, pulling the skin off their faces before working their way down...

...quite a literary one, seems at first unsuited for treatment on the big screen. The sparse dialogue shares time with voice-overs by Bancroft and Hopkins reading aloud the amusing epistolary interchanges between their characters. Perhaps correctly sensing the thinness of the letters gimmick, screenwriter Hugh Whitmore tries to flesh out the story by including little vignettes of Hanff and Dole's lives...

Early on, the Fisherman pays his respects to the food chain: "It takes 50 pounds of silversides to produce a five-pound blue. It takes 500 pounds of plankton to produce those silversides. It takes 5,000 pounds of microscopic sea plants to produce those plankton animals . . . 'All flesh is grass.'
