...Creative connectivity was the festival's theme. Some artists, like Samoan-New Zealander Graham Fletcher, found the similarities between cultures more striking than their differences. Sharing accommodation with Maori and Tongan artists in the New Zealand compound, "We spent all night talking, basically," Fletcher recalls. "It's amazing the connection between all of our languages and customs and everything. We're much closer than we think...

...flight schedules NASA had proposed had never been adequately funded by Washington. Under NASA's current $7.3 billion annual budget, spare parts were running so short that the commission projected that this year's flight schedule would have been sharply curtailed even without a Challenger disaster. Reagan gave James Fletcher, NASA's new administrator, 30 days to explain how he intends to implement the commission's recommendations. A more basic decision on whether to replace Challenger with a new, fourth orbiter remained uncertain. At his press conference the President encouraged the embattled space agency by saying, ''I think we should...

The eight- and 16-bar call-and-response choruses, sung out lustily by the saxophones, trumpets and trombones, supported wild improvisational flights by Goodman, Trumpeter Harry James and Drummer Krupa. The big breakthrough came at the Palomar Ballroom in Los Angeles. ''I called out some of our big Fletcher Henderson arrangements,'' remembered Goodman, ''and the boys seemed to get the idea.'' These arguments seem inconsequential when you take a walk along the Fletcher Cove beach. It's not the white-sanded littoral paradise of a thousand movies but a grungy, rock-strewn place. A municipal storm drain releases onto the main part of the beach, and a sign warns that the water issuing from it may be unhealthy. The ugly concrete drain structure is maligned by graffiti - "Rizzo [hearts] Jenny" - and gnats attack any exposed skin as soon as you set foot on Fletcher Cove sand. Big, bulbous, black stink bugs fearlessly investigate your feet as soon...
