Howard Hughes climbed into his plane last week and flew down to San Diego, where Atlas Corp.'s Floyd Odium was inspecting Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corp., one of Atlas' properties. Hughes was interested in another Atlas Corp. property: RKO. Since the dark days of 1935 when RKO and its chain of theaters were deep in the red, Atlas had gradually bought up 929,020 RKO shares, a controlling (24%) interest. Atlas Corp.'s management, and the war, had put RKO healthily into the black. Now Odium wanted to get out and take his profit...
Home Builder. Plastics were also well represented at the show. Beetle Boat Co., Inc.'s 12½-ft. centerboard sailboat was molded in one piece of Fiberglas. From his Tulsa factory, Gar Wood Jr. flew in two 16-ft. speedboats pressed from a plastic called "Nautilite." Other novelties: seat cushions with phosphorescent side-strips, non-tipping gasoline cans, an automatic pilot for outboard motors, a mechanism which automatically frees snagged outboard propellers...

Mexican Captain Soto Mc-Nerney was resplendent in a green hunting costume, with fur collar, from Manhattan's Abercrombie & Fitch. The London Times man, clad in street clothes and carrying a neatly rolled umbrella, looked as though he had just stepped...
...Marrakech, Morocco, Winston Churchill, 73, was out & around after 1) a tussle with a bad cold, 2) a spell of bronchitis, 3) a plague of morbid rumors that had far-off London wringing its hands. Wife Clementine flew down with her husband's private physician. Next day the patient went motoring, dealt the rumors a crushing blow by dining in public on soup, fish with mayonnaise, veal soufflé, cake with whipped cream, tangerines and coffee...
This prosperity did not cover everything. The private plane industry flew through an overcast of bankruptcies; most prefabricated housing still remained in the box. The airlines dropped an estimated $13 million in the most disastrous year they ever had, and the big plane companics sat, hat in hand, in Washington, pleading with the Government to save their industry...
