After yet another round of negotiations on Palestinian autonomy in the Tel Aviv suburb of Herzlia, U.S. Special Middle East Ambassador Sol Linowitz flew to Cairo late last week to commiserate with Anwar Sadat. The Egyptian President greeted his "good friend Sol" in an uncharacteristically morose mood. Later that evening came the reason, and the shocker: Sadat requested an indefinite postponement of the talks, which were supposed to produce an autonomy agreement...

...work on last year's cover story "The Colombian Connection: Billions in Pot and Coke." Neff interviewed drug enforcement officials in New York, Miami and Bogotá, and surveyed by small plane the clandestine airstrips and marijuana plantations of Colombia's remote Guajira province. "We got shot at when we flew too low," says Neff. "They probably thought we were hijackers after their crop." ...unusually meticulous care, even though their crews did not know of the impending mission. Fifteen maintenance men were assigned to each of the eight helicopters aboard the Nimitz. In addition, two civilian helicopter technical experts, including one from Sikorsky, were sent to the carrier. Almost daily, maintenance pilots flew the choppers to make sure that they were in top condition. In fact, the crews tending the RH-53s recently won Navy awards for their exceptional maintenance record. The U.S. military may have a general problem in retaining skilled maintenance men, the mission planners concede, but the best were available...
