After that session, Muller flew on to South Africa to see at first hand the crisis that has intensified pressure in the West to impose broad sanctions -- the subject of this week's cover stories. He had a long meeting with Louis Nel, South Africa's Deputy Minister of Information, about the government's sweeping press restrictions. The month-old rules have complicated the work of Johannesburg Bureau Chief Bruce Nelan and Reporter Peter Hawthorne, but Muller left determined "that TIME continue to be able to provide its readers with honest, fair and accurate reporting from South Africa...
...petition is a gimmick designed to fatten G.O.P. coffers, to be sure, but Reagan was perfectly happy to play along. On the fund-raising circuit himself last week, he told a Texas audience that as he flew over the Dallas Convention Center, where he was renominated in 1984, he thought, "I wonder how folks down there would feel about giving it one more try?" As the audience broke into delirious applause, Reagan quickly added, with his showman's timing, "I'm kidding, of course." But not wholly. Reporters from all 53 news organizations had signed up for the tour, so they had to divide into two groups. The first section flew north in a battered Israelimade Arava. After being shuttled to a more suitable airstrip, they lifted off and returned to Trinidad. At that point, antsy members...

But Mexico took a step back from the abyss last week when its Finance Minister, Gustavo Petricioli, flew to Washington to sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund that could generate $12 billion in new loans to spur Mexico's economy and make up for lost oil-export revenues. The deal was noteworthy because it suggested that the IMF could be moving away from its traditional emphasis...
Burma Air Corporation is an experience in itself. The plane we flew on was a Fokker propeller plane, an old East German number--remember World War I? Half of the seats in the aircraft fell or crumpled forward and the ones which didn't fall forward generally collapsed backward when you sat down. Needless to say, there were no safety cards or safety announcements. In fact, there was no boarding announcement, either--just a sort of spontaneous herding to the door...
