...that Daly and Semel originally launched to box-office bravos, the thrill was in fact fading fast for the dynastic duo. Warner's had produced a string of costly flops in the past two years before rebounding in 1999 with such hits as The Matrix, a sci-fi action flick, and the mob comedy Analyze This. The Daly-Semel formula centered on the relationships the two had with stars like Mel Gibson and Clint Eastwood and producers like Joel Silver. The movies were big--Lethal Weapon, Unforgiven--the dollars were bigger, and everyone got a piece of the action, including...

STANLEY KUBRICK died in March, days after finishing his controversial film Eyes Wide Shut. But that may not be the last moviegoers see of his work. Warner Bros. owns the rights to AI, a science-fiction flick Kubrick wanted to do about artificial intelligence. Warner co-chief TERRY SEMEL says there is a script and even storyboards completed for the movie. Such is the case with "toilet ball," the sport my friends and I recently invented on the grassy lawn of Quincy House. During a trip to the superintendent's office, we discovered that a roll of toilet paper--when punted with a flick of the ankle--has surprising loft and travels far. Wrap the roll in masking tape to prevent the paper from unravelling, and voila--you have a genuine toilet ball, good for about 50 minutes of play before it totally falls apart. Advantages of toilet ball over conventional projectiles: It's soft to catch and can't possibly...
