Hackman is probably the subtlest screen player of his generation. He is a genius at hiding his true feelings under humor, letting them show with a seemingly unconscious flicker of expression or an unfinished gesture. Dafoe stands up to him with the kind of flat-voiced certainty mastered only by men of few, but unshakable, principles. Though each learns something from the other, their relationship retains its pure scratchiness from beginning to end. These guys are never going to be buddies...

Democracy is an optimistic faith, and the choice of a new President cannot help inspiring a flicker of faith. The victorious Bush spoke to these dreams when he said, "A campaign is a disagreement, and disagreements divide. But an election is a decision, and decisions clear the way for harmony and peace." In an odd way, the dispiriting shallowness of the campaign had the virtue of leaving no lasting scars on the nation's psyche. Because there were no great disagreements on fundamental issues and no clashing visions of an American future, there are no deep divisions difficult to reconcile...

As is obvious to anyone who has watched the images of student demonstrations and political protest flicker across a television screen, it is a system beset by imperfection, discord and conflict, riven by diverse opinions and hot tempers, but a functioning democracy nonetheless...
