...Accompanist" is not a typical World War II flick. Though what action there is takes place in occupied France and war-torn London, reference to international conflicts serve only to illuminate the nature of individual characters. Focusing on Irene Brice (Elena Safonova), a diva on the brink of universal success, her husband Charles (Richard Bohringer), and her impoverished accompanist, Sophie Vasseur (Romane Bohringer), the movie--through lighting, facial close-ups, music, and symbols--studies personalities, not history...
...what followed. After two and a half years of now playing my saxophone after a bout with lockjaw (don't ask), I let it all hang out (so to speak). I played shapes, colors, impulses. I closed my eyes and imagined myself narrating--no, animating--a "Sick and Twisted" flick with each explosion of sound. At times I wasn't sure if I was playing or if I was just along for the ride. My fingers flew up and down the length of the horn; my lips were tense and taut at one turn and lovingly loose at the next...
Their zig-zag escapades from the Midwest to the Southwest make "Bonnie and Clyde" an adventure flick in the style of a pioneer Western. As Clyde and Bonnie travel, they move farther and farther from civilization and its attendant rules. In their travels they pick up C.W. Post (Michael J. Pollard), a gas station attendant, Clyde's brother-in-law, Buck (Gene Hackman), and his wife Blanche (Estelle Parsons), a nag and complainer who puts a damper on the group's free-wheeling fun. She is a constant reminder of the boredom and drudgery of the world that Bonnie...
...version also saddled with Julian Holloway's cutesy capering as Eliza's debauched father, Dolores Sutton's vamping as Higgins' mother and sets that make the Covent Garden flower market look like a Florida condo in mid- construction and render Higgins' study fit for a Vincent Price horror flick, Chamberlain shows calculated charm and wit. He sings better than Rex Harrison and looks terrific. His best scenes are with the normally bland Pickering, whom Paxton Whitehead makes droll...
...trashed this movie enough: it does have its redeeming qualities. This is a Disney flick; it's aimed at a Disney crowd, not at snobs like me. Anyone under the age of 16 is sure to enjoy it. Take a younger sibling; or, send your immature roommate! And if you're in the mood for action and adventure and a little history, disregard my criticisms. The horse-powered chase scenes are simply smashing; and the requisite grand explosion, where a burning carriage collides with barrels of gunpowder, is highly gratifying. There are even some clever cinematic moments, such as when...
