Oddly enough, its counterpart--known affectionately as "Fall back"-- doesn't seem so off-kilter. Why second-guess the power of the government to create an hour out of thin air with the flick of a switch? That's an extra sixty minutes of sleep, partying and flexing those procrastination muscles on a paper which is still due at noon--although suddenly it's only one o'clock in the morning...
...factory. But that's the blatant aim of this remake of a 1973 occult cult classic--hence the over-the-top visual effects, the showy lesbian overtones and the general '70s-horror vibe. Casting Kate Jackson, from the original Satan, shows how desperately this 6-6-sex flick wants cult cred. And casting Shannen Doherty of Charmed reminds us that there's cooler supernatural programming on several nights a week...
...Jonathan's treachery is repulsive both in action and thought. That natural repulsion is, I'm afraid, exploited to an unpleasant degree. A character without memory is just too easy to put in danger. This is the literary equivalent of going after the family pet in a horror flick: the victim is a helpless pawn whom we have little chance to meet properly, and thus have little incentive to care about in any specific sense. Put simply, it's a cheap way to build drama...
...While seemingly complicated, what astounds is how a movie which initially has potential for so much comedic depth ends up being only as deep and enjoyable as your run-of-the-mill Hugh Grant flick. Perry plays the nervous neighbor to perfection, but too often resorts to the antics of Chandler Bing on "Friends," and he is unwholly suited for the heroic turn he makes later in the movie. Bruce Willis plays the glamorous hitman a little too glamorously, and his comedic style appears to be to speak as little as possible while still looking glib and threatening. Having appeared...
