...traveler who has flown recently need not be told that air travel can be rough. With airlines systematically eliminating the niceties that once made flying bearable - free checked luggage, in-flight meals, complimentary headsets, the entire can of soda - it's only gotten rougher...

...early wake-up call wasn't quite necessary - our flight out was, of course, delayed by an hour. Ice-cap flights have an on-time record that makes United's look meticulous, but at least there's an excuse here. Weather in Greenland is changeable, and even in the summer, hardly perfect for flying. It's not unusual for flights to be delayed for hours, even canceled altogether, sometimes stranding people on the ice cap for days at a time. We were lucky - our plane did depart, and landed safely at NEEM some two-and-a-half hours later. There...

Since 2006 there have been a growing list of such relatively minor mishaps: burst tires...

...Unfortunately for Qantas, it wasn't the end of their problems. Three days after the emergency landing in Manila, a Qantas jet bound for Melbourne turned around mid-flight and returned to Adelaide after the door on a wheel bay failed to close. "There was no safety risk at any time," assured a company spokeswoman. But for some passengers, two incidents in less than a week proved too much: they refused to board the alternate aircraft Qantas arranged, saying they'd rather take...
