...half the original price for all of its used paperbacks. But give them a place like the Starr Book Shop with its crazy castle exterior and its piles and shelves of musty, dust-covered, unalphabetized books, and their romanticism goes wild. Visions of Bloomsbury circles and artistic Jamesian bookbinders flit through their minds. No doubt they imagine the booksellers themselves -- the tall, thin man with the distinguished-looking, white goatee, and the heavier-set, clean-shaven man with the ever-present pipe--as the central figures in a coterie of important literary Bostonians...
...Mummy's Tomb. Each is turned out on a near-strangulation budget and schedule ($500,000 and 25 shooting days). The plots, usually lifted from some Victorian romancer like Bram Stoker or Sheridan Le Fanu, are as creaky as the doors of Castle Dracula. The starlets who flit through prehistoric landscapes or quaint Transylvanian villages, bosoms heaving with fright, seem as interchangeable as the sets...
Curtis' paintings have none of the conceptual density or revolutionary aims of surrealist imagery; they are gentle, mannered, elegiac, peopled with doll-like Edwardian women and dandified men. These ghosts, thin and sharp as memory in the preservative desert air, flit through empty, curlicued facades or congregate amid their elaborate furniture, radiating a wistful chic; as image maker, Curtis is more elegant than challenging. His objects do not confront one another in shock, like Lautréamont's famous sewing machine and umbrella on a dissecting table-they nod, as it were, with mild and civil assent...
Petit's extravaganza is a lush mixture of Now and Then. His dancers, tricked out in crushed-velvet pantsuits by Yves St. Laurent, open with the springy "L'Amour du Métier" (The Love of Show Business). As they sing, they flit in and out of a flashing construction of steel tubes designed by the Venezuelan painter Jesús Raphael Soto. Then the Tiller Girls, 16 bright British birds whose forebears were the original inspiration for the Radio City Rockettes, descend from the ceiling in sentinel boxes. Their number is followed by blonde-wigged nudes...
...Flit Guns. Cincinnati citizens turned the two-night extravaganza into a community project. The Minsky show was staged in the nearby Shubert Theater, and post-performance parties were thrown at the Gayety. Some 100 lady volunteers scrubbed away part of the Gayety's grime and even painted over the most unsavory washroom graffiti. Sixty years of libidinous musk was impossible to eradicate, however; before the opening-night party, Flit guns filled with Nettie Rosenstein perfume were distributed among the ladies...
