...monologue, the first of three short plays by filmmaker Neil LaBute titled Bash--she plays a woman who confesses to a horrific crime, yet by the end you want to give her a sympathetic hug. Sitting at a starkly lit table, apparently in a police station, Calista Flockhart doesn't take long to shed her Ally affectations. Talking in a flat Midwestern twang, she recounts with grueling matter-of-factness how she was seduced by a teacher at age 13, had a baby, was abandoned by him and took revenge by...well, the playlet is called Medea Redux. Enough said...
Hoffman stages their play-within-a-play with energetic conviction, and Bottom's misalliance with Titania, the fairy queen (Michelle Pfeiffer), is played with a certain sexy intensity. But the human lovers (who include Calista Flockhart as the comically obsessed Helena), muddled by the carelessness of Stanley Tucci's smug Puck with his love potions, don't achieve firm definition. Lacking the center of concern they might provide, this version of the play becomes a collection of well-loved scenes: dutiful but mostly unmagical...
...While iambic pentameter usually complicates dialogue enough to make directors resort to other narrative devices (dance in West Side Story and gaudy cinematography in Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet), Hoffman's production miraculously retains both the language and the humor of the original version. Case in point, Calista Flockhart is surprisingly effective, delivering lightweight slams like "spite... oh hell!" with utter conviction. Less a comedy of language than a physical comedy of errors, film makes it possible to keep all the characters straight. Though bad high school productions usually turn the play into a mass of unfunny confusion...
