Black Sparrow's first book was by a hard-drinking roustabout, Charles Bukowski. Says Martin: "He was the kind of guy that drank in sailors' bars, got into fights with everyone in the room and wound up drinking alone with everyone stretched out on the floor." Between bouts Bukowski wrote terse, explicit poetry and fiction in the self-advertising style of Henry Miller ("The young coeds came up with their hot young bodies and their pilot- light eyes . . ."). Martin offered to pay the author $100 a month if he would quit his postal worker's job and work full time...
Flashbulbs popped, klieg lights blazed. On the 17th floor of federal police headquarters in Sao Paulo last week, Romeu Tuma, the mustachioed federal police superintendent who is Brazil's best-known detective, stood amid a gaggle of reporters and television crewmen assembled for a regular briefing. Without delay, Tuma came to the point. The evidence, he said firmly, was steadily mounting that the body, which had been exhumed from a graveyard in the little town of Embu a few days earlier, was that of Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor who sent some 400,000 concentration-camp prisoners to their deaths...
...Square's 27 new, used and specialty book stores dot several corners and fill at least three basements. For textbooks and general reading, your best bet is to start with the Harvard Coop. Most of the Square crowd lingers on the first floor with the bestsellers and picture books. But brave the escalator to check out the fiction and slightly scholarly tomes on the second level. Textbooks are on floor three. One reminder: return textbooks within three weeks of purchase, or you'll be stuck with them...
...tired of Plympton Street head over to The Book Case (42 Church St.) Post cards and junk gifts fill the top floor and a labyrinth of used volumes make up the basement. Look in the six-by-six foot "Room A" for occult books, "Room B" for religion, and go to the store's Annex (33 Church St.) if you don't like reading in the dark. The Pangloss Bookshop (65 Mt. Auburn St.) is another sure bet for cheap used books, especially in the social sciences...
...commandos moved through the building, four gun-toting plainclothes officers entered the emergency ward, ordering patients, doctors and nurses to lie facedown on the floor. When the commandos broke into the ward, they shot and killed the plainclothesmen, apparently mistaking them for armed unionists. A fifth death came when a female patient in the intensive-care unit died of a heart attack. The strikers claimed that she had been left unattended when doctors and nurses were rounded up by the commandos. Asked one union member: ! "If this is the democracy that we workers voted for, why are they treating...
