Baseball's high-priced bonus player is as often as not a disappointing flop. Two current examples: Pittsburgh's Pitcher Paul Pettit ($100,000), now laboring for his fourth minor-league club, the Hollywood (class AAA) Stars, and Cleveland's Pitcher Billy Joe Davidson (more than $100,000), who has yet to show much of anything in the Class B Tri-State League. Nervously querying its embassies abroad, the State Department was told that Communism's refusal to let the outside world see for itself had discredited the Communist campaign everywhere this side of the Iron Curtain. But that did not mean it was a flop.
