Every element in the Loeb production conspires to undercut the play's serious intention. As if taking the cue from Donald Soule's unbalanced set design, which places the richly-colored tavern hearth flush against the dry burlap of symmetrical castle towers, the comic scenes, appearing in the midst of the serious, only seem to mock them. The peak of this production is reached when Falstaff, balancing his weight on a chair balanced on a table top, wearing a pillow on his head as crown, chastises Hal in mimicry of his father, the king. Even at the climax...
Undoubtedly stimulated by the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, UFO freaks have been deluging the White House with mail. Most demand that President Carter make good on a campaign promise that if there were any secrets about the UFOs he would flush them out, if elected. Carter reported in 1973, while Governor of Georgia, that several years earlier he had seen a UFO in the form of a "glowing light" in the night sky. A go-go property speculator during the flush '60s, he has been left teetering near bankruptcy by the collapse of land prices. His friend and financial adviser, Len Wincobank, is serving a four-year prison term for fraud. Kitty Friedmann loses a foot and her husband in a random terrorist bombing. Keating's lover, Alison Murray, has a teen-age daughter jailed for reckless driving in a Balkan Communist state. "England...
...first flush of his success, Elvis lived with the crazy vigor of a good ole boy who just had the whole world tucked snugly into the back pocket of his overalls. He surrounded himself with home-town cronies, kept them fed and cared for, dispensed lavish gifts. He gave away luxury cars-particularly the Cadillacs he doted on-like gumdrops. After a while, though, the cronies became heavies-bodyguards, procurers-and the gifts bribes to buy loyalty, or silence. He courted a girl, Priscilla Beaulieu, he had met during his Army hitch. He persuaded her father to let her come...
