...daub of foam and then a dark hulk appeared on the surface of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Provincetown, Mass., last week. The Navy submarine S-4 had been raised from the bottom of the sea, exactly 15 minutes less than three months after it had been gored by the Coast Guard destroyer Paulding (TIME, Dec. 26).
