...succeeded it in the 16th and 17th centuries, is another piece of commanding archaeological evidence: a small, three-niched shrine set up between 160 and 170, roughly a century and a half before Constantine started building. Called the Aedicula (meaning little room or shrine), it was used as the focal point of Constantine's church, and was the only structure not razed to ramp level by the church builders. As Constantine's architects did 150 years later, the builders of the Aedicula had evidently gone to considerable trouble to place the shrine exactly where they wanted it, nested...
...year-old Japanese woman whom Girard shot in the back on a firing range seven months ago. Until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Japan had the right to try him (TIME, July 22), the Girard case was headline material on both sides of the Pacific and the focal point, in the U.S., of more jingoistic and uninformed editorial comment than perhaps any subject since the Spanish-American...
Latest and handsomest building is the just-completed Bijenkorf ("Beehive") department store, designed by Hungarian-born, Bauhaus-trained Architect Marcel Breuer (TIME, Oct. 22). Last week its artistic companion piece and focal point was set into place: a massive (36 tons, 80 ft. tall), free-standing sculpture, placed on the sidewalk, that reaches up nearly to the top of the five-story department store. It is the most ambitious and successful combination of modern sculpture and architecture yet attempted...

White and Negro ministers should bring their congregations together for joint counseling before school integration begins, as Nashville clergymen plan to do before the first-grade classes of their city's schools are desegregated next September. Protestant churches should sponsor lectures on the focal points of whites' fears-intermarriage, Negro health and morals, etc.-as New Orleans Roman Catholic churches have done...
David Bryden seems slightly miscast as Lt. Barney Greenwald, counsel for the defense, in many ways the focal character of the play. He carries the part with a brashness and at times a gaucherie that seems entirely unfitted to the role, although he has a few redeeming moments. James Putnam as Lt. Thomas Keefer, male-volent, sarcastic intellectual, shows some signs of having thought about his part, although he tends toward overacting. The same might be said of David Galloway who is quite engaging in his brief appearance as Signalman Urban. William Balchelder as the senior officer of the court...
