...DaimlerChrysler's chairman after the first three years, might be the kind of Mercedes executive who can bridge that gap and make this marriage work. A former apprentice mechanic, he arrived in Stuttgart in 1987 and made--and later unmade--an ill-fated deal with Dutch aerospace firm Fokker. He also did a stint at a Daimler division in Cleveland, Ohio. When Daimler fell deep in the red in the mid-'90s, he embarked on a series of American-style cost-cutting programs that reduced the work force by some 20,000 and the number of operating businesses from...

Frans Swarttouw, former chairman of the Fokker aircraft company and one of the Netherlands' most colorful businessmen, bid an unusual farewell to his countrymen a few weeks ago. Stricken with throat cancer, the executive, 64, who once characterized an entrepreneur as "a guy who works hard, drinks himself into the ground and chases women," said he had stopped his painful therapy and opted out of a life-saving operation that would have left him an invalid. The crash occurred about one mile...

Executives at the upstarts cross their hearts and deny any intention of stealing business from the wary giants. "We're not pulling traffic away from anyone," says Mark Morro, chairman of Air 21, which last December began flying Fokker F.28 4000s, leased from USAir, out of Fresno. "We're bringing passengers back to the airport." Lewis Jordan, president of ValuJet, which bases its 47-plane fleet in Atlanta, says Delta, its looming neighbor at Hartsfield Airfield, has nothing to fear. "We stole people from their living rooms and automobiles," he insists, not from Delta flights. Maybe, but ValuJet earned...

...likely to become a familiar sight on U.S. runways. Fokker is negotiating with United Airlines for the sale of as many as 200 planes, and with Delta for 100. Says Fokker's Swarttouw, 56, who plans to retire soon: "We have secured a future for Fokker of 15 to 20 years...
