...euthanasia to the Kinsey Report. One of its priests recently outlined Farm Street's function as "presenting the Catholic religion in modern terms to the intelligentsia of the day and answering any attacks made upon Catholics.'' Immaculate Conception is no parish church; it contains no baptismal font and performs no marriages. Instead, its 20-odd priests in residence handle a tough, three-part assignment: 1) administering (under Father Desmond Boyle) the 903 members of the Jesuit Order in England, Scotland, Wales, Rhodesia and British Guiana, 2) publishing (under Father Philip Caraman) a highbrow monthly called The Month...
Skidless Shine. A tough, nonslippery floor wax is being test-marketed by E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. For use on both hardwood and linoleums, the Safety Floor Wax contains tiny, gripping particles of Du Font's Ludox (colloidal silica) which snub the forward motion of a shoe hitting the shiny floor, bring it to a safe and sure-footed stop.. Price: $1.29 a quart...
...going out of the "miracle" synthetic fibers, particularly those which are supposed to resemble wool. Sales of Acrilan are so slow that Chemstrand Corp. has cut output at its new $30 million Decatur (Ala.) plant to 17% of capacity, laid off all but a handful of workers. Du Font's Orion is not selling well either for use in worsted fabrics. Weavers, disillusioned about the extravagant billings of man-made fibers, are cutting their orders...
Ever since Du Font's quick-drying lacquer (Duco) revolutionized automobile painting in the 1920s, chemists have tried to find a similar paintmaking resin which could be dissolved in water, instead of in costly, inflammable solvents. But almost anything that water would dissolve could also be washed away by water after it dried. Last week Reichhold introduced a water-soluble resin which is the base for a paint that, after baking, can't be washed off. Moreover, it also withstands weathering, salt water and corrosion. For automakers, Reichhold's resin may mean an end to flash fires...
...Font's interest in tetraethyl, Alfred Sloan testified that it was G.M.'s Charles F. Kettering who suggested that rather than build a plant for making an antiknock component itself, G.M. should go into business with Du Pont, because "they were the best chemists in the country." From the 43 defense witnesses and two Government witnesses, onetime U.S. Rubber President F. B. Davis and Lawrence Fisher (Fisher Body), the Government was able to draw little evidence that a conspiracy to create or capitalize on "captive markets" had ever existed. At one point, U.S. Rubber President H. E. Humphreys...
