Some $2,500,000 worth of improvements have transformed the 1,600-ton 325-foot ship into a floating Elysium. Capable of 22 knots, mounting an amphibian Piaggio aircraft plus a landing craft, the yacht boasts a black-sweatered crew of 50 ("More than it needs to run a 40,000-ton tanker," says Onassis), two chefs, 42 extension phones, a bathtub that glitters with mosaic dolphins and flying fish and was copied from King Minos' palace at Knossos, and a swimming pool big enough to hold a Kennedy sloop...

In mid-December 1965, during the rendezvous of Gemini 6 and 7, Schirra pulled to within a foot of the other spacecraft and held up a sign for Gemini 7's command pilot, West Point Graduate Frank Borman. It read: "Beat Army." Later, on the same flight, he reported that he had sighted "an object" going into polar orbit. "Stand by," said Schirra, "it looks like...

Charles Street, at the foot of Beacon Hill, is the heart of the hippie community's social life. One end of Charles skirts Boston Common, which used to be the community's commercial center for the sale and barter of drugs. The business has been forcibly de-centralized since last August, when 200 to 300 hippies who had been eating, sleeping and trading on the Common were challenged by a midnight curfew. To protest, they staged sleepins, and there were several nights of rioting with police before the hippies grew tired and scattered to other living places...
