...protests and actions of the U.S., though often appearing puny by themselves, are beginning to take on heft. Access to more bases near the Persian Gulf, a floating contingent of Marines, increased aid to friends and more of everything to follow-all this makes an unmistakable footprint over there. Draft registration, talk of war, so deplored by some, are nevertheless a measure of seriousness. The Olympic boycott, which eventually may not win very many actual backers among other nations, has elevated concern about Soviet aggression in almost every part of the world. New courage to speak out is manifest...

...fact that British accents can be very distinctive. Experts who have analyzed the Ripper's flat, unemotional voice believe he may come from Sunderland in the county of Tyne and Wear in northeastern England, about 100 miles from where the killings have taken place. By studying a footprint found near the body of one victim, the police have determined the suspect's shoe size. They may also have detected his blood type in a way that has not been disclosed. But so far the dragnet has failed to turn up the clue that will lead to the killer...

...signs of deterioration were clear. At a height of 69 miles over the ocean, some of Skylab's batteries registered a temperature of 100° F far above the normal 60° F. Then the radio signals faded, and finally stopped. Breakup had begun, and the projected "footprint" of Skylab's debris seemed to be safely in the Indian Ocean. Houston's perspiring controllers relaxed. The monitoring team gave Johnson Space Center Director Christopher Kraft a Skylab SPLAT DOWN (instead of splashdown) T shirt For a time, Skylab still refused to die After losing its solar panels...

...Administration, which conceived and launched Skylab six years ago, took comfort in the mathematics of probabilities. Some 500 fragments of the huge space workshop will be dispersed over an area 4,000 miles long and 100 miles wide, a scattering that the scientists call, with anthropomorphic archness, Skylab's "footprint." Moreover, on each of Skylab's 90-minute orbits of the earth, nearly 67 minutes, or 75%, is spent over water. What all that means, contend NASA'S statisticians, is that the chance of any remnant striking a human being is only 1 in 152; the probability of any specific...

Three days later, shortly after Martian sunrise, Viking reached out with its arm, scooped up a sample of Martian soil and dumped it into the craft's biological laboratory. Scientists first learned that the arm was working from a picture transmitted from the lander. The shot showed a footprint-like trench about 6½ in. long, 2½ in. wide and 2 in. deep that had been scooped out by Viking. Scientists were struck by the fact that the sides of the trench had not collapsed. Said Princeton University Geologist Robert Hargraves: "It's strange material. It looks...
