...Grisham but is virtually unknown here in the benighted Western world. (Akunin is actually the pen name of a respected Georgian academic, Grigory Chkhartishvili. Don't worry, no one in Russia can pronounce it either.) The case of the suicidal swain lands in the lap of a fresh-faced, foppish but surprisingly resourceful young detective named Erast Fandorin, who quickly becomes swept up in a glamorous whirl of moneyed expatriates and gambling, champagne-guzzling aristocrats. You'll understand right away what the Russians see in Akunin: he writes gloriously pre-Soviet prose, sophisticated and suffused in Slavic melancholy and thoroughly...

...miss, suffering not because of weak voices or poor acting, but because of odd choices (and in many cases, a complete absence of choices). As the Princes, Christian E.K. Lerch ’04 and Dan P. Berwick ’01, lack chemistry and play so clueless and foppish that the obvious comedy of their duets, “Agony,” is undercut and their overall characterizations suffer. Bill Murray as Polonius injects significant pathos into Polonius' foppish politicking and Liev Schriber demonstrates some exceptionally tender moments before he departs in the opening act. In their short time together, this father-son duo exudes great paternal chemistry, which ends up more compelling than the shallow animosity between Claudius and Hamlet. The film improves in the second half, which...
