As dean, he brought Harvard's choruses underone umbrella. Peabody Professor of Music emeritusElliot Forbes says Epps was instrumental insecuring Holden Chapel as a headquarters forchoral groups.
"[The Knafel Project] is the first time that Harvard has cooperated with the community," said Cambridge resident Crosby Forbes at the meeting that unveiled the alternative plans. "This is the first time they told us what they were doing from the beginning."
"He was as at home teaching undergrads as he was grads," said Forbes, who studied under Merritt in the late 1930s and early '40s.
"He was close to students all right, particularly the ones he had in courses and tutorials," Forbes said.
"More than anyone, he was my mentor," Forbes said.
