Modern cattlemen herd their cattle by helicopter, brand them with dry ice instead of red-hot irons, talk about "gatherings" instead of roundups, depend on a good accountant more than a wise old foreman and, when they fade into the sunset, do so in pickup trucks with their trusty horses comfortably trailered on behind. About the only things old pokes would still recognize about the industry, indeed, are its size and its troubles. Cattle roam no less than 40% of all the land in the U.S., account for 20% of all farm income and the principal revenues of at least...
...grape picker in California works between 10 and 12 hours a day in fields which average more than 105 degrees during the summer. There are no toilets in the fields. Drinking water is allotted according to the number of bushels picked. The number is arbitrary depending upon the foreman's mood. The migrants live in tents, the regulars in long tin huts. By the time most of the children are 12 years old, they've quit school and work with their parents in the fields. Nobody earns more than $1.40 per hour picking grapes...

The solidarity was useful to both sides. Africans could mount pressure on the Federal Government about American racial injustices, while American Negroes sought to make the U.S. take a more enlightened view toward Africa...
...drunk is a question psychologists have never really answered. There is no doubt that violence has a cathartic effect, and the pressures that cause it must find an outlet of one kind or another. (Japan's Matsushita Electric Co. has set up a dummy of the foreman that workers can beat up on a given day once a week, thereby presumably releasing their aggressions...
Since their formation in the wake of Foreman's October visit, the Friends of SNCC have been a small thorn in the administration's side. Dubbed a "provisional campus organization," they were allowed to meet in the religious center, and, theoretically, to use university facilities, just like any other full-fledged campus organization. But in March, the administration apparently thought it had found the issue with which it could gracefully get the Friends of SNCC out of its hair. A group of Negro performers, known as the Gospel Singers, were arrested in East Texas, and allegedly beaten by local police...
