Many plant lovers are also plant killers: they never quite find the right mix of light and water to keep their houseplants alive. Weyerhaeuser, the Tacoma, Wash.-based forest-products company, believes this problem may now be solved. Last week the firm began selling plants, trees and flowers that have been put into a kind of permanent "sleep." Weyerhaeuser owns the North American rights to the treatment, in which nontoxic preservatives are injected into the plants. The process, which also permits the use of dyes to transform green plants into red ones, has been available on a limited basis...
...Road Runner animated shorts that even he has lost count. Jones has no trouble recalling the number of books he has produced: this is his first. The star is a highly odiferous creature who wears his white stripe in front, where no enemy can see it. In the forest, confusion reigns supreme. The panthers, foxes and bears are afraid to hunt; without a stripe across the back, any small, furry animal might be a stinker. Will hunger prevail? Jones believes in a peaceable kingdom, but he is well aware of Woody Allen's aphorism that the lion may lie down...
Janzen has observed that dry forests can re-establish themselves. They need only to be protected from heavy grazing, overhunting and fires set annually by local residents to clear the land. If the forest is allowed to grow back naturally, a closed canopy forms in about 20 years. Aided by planted seedlings, he estimates, regeneration would take only a decade. Rejuvenated dry forest attracts a wide variety of animals, which, in turn, help disperse seeds. In Santa Rosa, the biologist has counted 170 species of birds; 700 species of plants; about 13,000 species of insects, including 3,140 species...
Part of his strategy is to make Guanacaste what he calls "user friendly," accessible to local people, researchers, school groups and tourists. He makes a point of instructing visitors in natural history. As a result, he says, "people are no more likely to damage the forest than they are to steal gold candlesticks from the local church." Four ex-farmers have become park guards and are responsible for stopping hunters and preventing or controlling grass fires. Janzen permits the farmers to live in the park and use a portion of the land to raise crops and a few cattle. Limited...
...than any other nation in the tropics. Janzen admits that he would not have attempted such a large-scale reclamation project anywhere else. But, he says, "I think this is the way of the future. Guanacaste is a demonstration of the fact that you can grow back a tropical forest if the community that lives around it comes to embrace it as a cultural resource. If we can have that happen over the long term, a lot of the problems of tropical conservation will be licked...
