...denouncement was not even considered a betrayal. "[The informer] belonged to one side of the struggle and turned in an enemy," he said. "But he would have also known the consequences. Those people were convinced that the class struggle is tough," Tuma concludes. "When you are chopping down a forest, splinters fly." Dvoracek ended up spending almost 14 years in jail, mostly in a notorious labor camp, a uranium mine in Bohemia...

...threats to wildlife on the African island of Madagascar are manifold: rampant deforestation that has stripped most of the island of its original forest cover, leaving a wasteland; a human population that is growing at 3% a year, straining natural resources and hunting animals for food, especially Madagascar's emblematic lemurs; extractive industry, including a nickel mine not far from a national park that could become the world's biggest...

While the impact of climate change on human populations is likely to be dire, we're pretty good at adapting to change overall. Animals, however, are not. When their habitats change irrevocably - when the rain forest dries up or cool mountains in tropical zones heat up - animals may simply go extinct. A recent study in Science demonstrates how that can happen. Robert Colwell, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Connecticut, analyzed data from nearly 2,000 species of plants, insects and fungi in the tropics, where organisms often lack the ability to escape warming temperatures by going north...

Last month, when it wanted to alert backers at the University of Florida that Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker would be speaking on Obama's behalf on the sprawling Gainesville campus, it went to cyberspace instead of the quad. "The campaign texted us,"boasts Moller. "They also use Facebook a lot. They make the extra effort to connect with younger voters...

...number one driver of extinction is habitat loss and degradation, which affects 40% of the world's mammals. That can be seen clearly in the deforestation afflicting much of the tropical world, including Madagascar, where 90% of the country's original forest cover has been lost. Vast stretches of the once verdant island, where I traveled with Mittermeier last month, are eroded wastelands, capable of supporting few animals or people. Though the rate of deforestation has been reduced sharply in recent years, thanks in part to a greener government, Madagascar's protected areas are still threatened by new mining projects...
