...Millions of visitors to New York's American Museum of Natural History have been spellbound by its dioramas, those three-dimensional displays of stuffed animals and birds set in meticulous reconstructions of their natural habitats. Many of the backgrounds-vistas of veldt and forest clearings-were painted by Francis Lee Jaques, the Illinois-born ornithologist and nature artist.
