American car owners have a peculiar habit. When we walk out of a mall, blinking and dazed, and realize we've forgotten where we've parked, we scan the parking lot, keys in hand, and ask, "Where am I?" Where am I - because your car, in this country, is you. It expresses your aspirations, your taste, your social class and your virility (or your need to compensate for same). I learned this growing up near Detroit, where people lived for their cars - American cars! - and lived by the GM slogan, "It's not just your car, it's your freedom...

...PEREJIL ISLAND Six Moroccan soldiers stormed this largely forgotten Spanish possession 200 meters off the African coast in July 2002, adding to long-simmering tension between Madrid and Rabat. But the dispute lost its sense of urgency after the Madrid train bombings. In his traditional first overseas trip, Spain's new Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, went to Morocco on Saturday to strengthen bilateral ties and encourage cooperation in the war on terror...

"Whenever I think of that time," he says, "I think of failure." His big break came in 1992, when Madras-based director Mani Ratnam wanted a new sound...

Jeff Zucker, who used to run the Today show before he started climbing the NBC executive ladder (now he's president of entertainment, news and cable), hasn't forgotten the interview Katie Couric did with President George H.W. Bush in October 1992. Still a relative newcomer as Today co-anchor, she was getting a tour of the White House from Barbara Bush when the President stopped by for a surprise hello. Interviews with Presidents usually entail days of research and lists of questions. Couric, on the fly, kept him going for nearly 20 minutes with small talk and tough questions...

...faith can learn from. And he has shown that globalism can be a way of taking seriously the idea that all of us are one another's neighbors and that Tibet--and China--are part of our responsibility, as we are of theirs. Long after his instant charisma is forgotten, he will be remembered as one who ensured a safe future for his culture outside Tibet and gave the rest of us an alternative home in what was once a very distant set of beliefs. --By PICO IYER, author of Sun After Dark
