...consumer attorney for the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG): "Because it's $1 here, $1.50 there, a lot of people may be shocked to see what they spend. They don't think it's going to cost that much." Consumer Reports estimates a payroll-card holder may fork over $164 a year in fees, but that is still less than the $324 the NYPIRG calculates for check cashing...
Crouching in front of our booth and leaning his arms on the edge of the table, John, our server extraordinaire, educates us on the art of eating seafood. The raw oysters, he tells us, should be pried from their shells with a plastic baby fork to preserve the integrity of their flavor. “You’re looking for something subtle,” he explains patiently. “It’s like wine—you’re looking for that special something that makes it different, better...

Tired of paying a bill to pay your bills online? Many Bank One customers now don't have to. Starting this month, most customers will no longer fork over the $4.95 monthly fee the bank charges for online bill payment. Bank One is just the latest to drop the fee. When Bank of America stopped charging in 2002, the number of people using the service more than doubled, to 2.4 million. Citibank, National City and Fifth Third Bank are among others that don't charge. --By Barbara Kiviat
