Returning to hockey for a moment, the NHL has been underway for about two weeks. It feels like the New Jersey Devils just won the Stanley Cup. For all of hockey's numerous virtues, it needs to reconsider the length of its regular season. The extended playoff format already renders most of the previous play irrelevant, so knocking off 10 games couldn't hurt. Of course, I would also like Commissioner Gary Bettman to knock off at least 5 teams. Sorry, Nashville...
...political error by scoring 95% for anecdotal accuracy, although I don't want to suggest for a second that his overall affect, especially the sighing, didn't make me want to shake him. He looked like Sylvester Stallone, absent the Uzi, as made up by Madame Tussaud. The format brought out the worst in him. Put him in front of a podium and out of his Dockers, and he reverts to his smartest-guy-in-the-class mode, impressing the teacher with factoids for extra credit, like Serbia plus Montenegro equals Yugoslavia. ...This was the debate format that was supposed to be most hospitable to Bush, the "Larry King"-style free-flowing exchange around a table that played to his down-home strengths. Bush did seem relaxed, perhaps too much so at times, as he fell back into a body language that suggested he might lean over and loose a stream of tobacco juice at any moment. In this respect, he may have been saved by the format too: Jim Lehrer, who ran a much tighter ship, rules-wise, than in the first debate, is not exactly a buddy-buddy moderator, which...
