Davis went to work for RTL, owned by German media giant Bertelsmann, which wanted to produce the sorts of TV movies popular in the U.S. Davis delivered Germany's first made-for-TV movie in 1993, and the format has proved such a commercial success that more than 200 made-for-TV movies now appear each year. Whatever his motives, the Motion Picture Association - which notified ?kokrim about DECSS - has highly pecuniary reasons to fight such activity. The studios contend that DECSS could spawn a filmic Napster if users decode DVDs into reproducible - and distributable - format. Losses could be huge: research firm Screen Digest estimates that in 2002 Europeans will spend more than ?5.2 billion on DVDs. ...Howard Zinn, in his book "Terrorism and War" (Seven Stories Press; 159 pages; $9.95) makes many of the same points as Chomsky (and in the same interview format), but in a tone more of sorrow than of anger: he comes off as Chomsky Lite. "We have to think about this awful thing that happened on September 11," Zinn states. "We need to feel deeply for the victims and the families. But we also need to learn from it."
